So what is a geek?
According to Dictionary.com, the term Geek is described as:
–noun Slang .
1. a computer expert or enthusiast (a term of pride as self-reference, but often considered offensive when used by outsiders.)
2. a peculiar or otherwise dislikable person, especially one who is perceived to be overly intellectual.
3. a carnival performer who performs sensationally morbid or disgusting acts, as biting off the head of a live chicken.
These are three very different definitions, none of which I personally identify with. So how about another source?
Wiki says the following about the current ideology surrounding Geek-dom:
“A more recent school of thought sees nerd as being a derogatory phrase, while geek is simply a description. It is taken to be someone who is an enthusiast, often in things outside of the mainstream spectrum. It may also describe immersion in a particular mainstream interest to an extreme that is beyond normalcy (e.g. sports geek). Of note is that in this definition, there is no reference to being socially inept in the slightest.”
and…
“Although being described as a geek tends to be an insult, the term has recently become more complimentary, or even a badge of honor, within particular fields. This is particularly evident in the technical disciplines, where the term is now often a compliment, denoting extraordinary skill.”
This last bit denoting the current understanding of being a geek is the one I am more in tune with. Even though I am in the Information Technology field I do not consider myself a tech-geek.
No, my little geeky heart thrives on sci-fi, fantasy, gaming, comics, movies, punk’d literature, board games, conventions, funky ties, themed anything, bad B movies, Star Wars (which, believe me, is its own category of geekdom), and making the impossible possible.
